NOTE: As I was writing this it all got a bit… long! So, I decided to split the post down into a number of parts. This is very much to help my understanding as well as providing others with a helpful guide. So, as with my Gulp posts, I’m going to break the process down and expand on it so that we can see how every step slots together. It also covers some fundamentals in that will be handy for future projects. It forms the basis of everything going forward and gave me a good understanding of how I could build my basic web app in Node and get it running to handle the file upload. As always, credit where credit is due, that tutorial is one of the best I’ve found to see Node working in an easy to understand, applied manner. Node seems like a great framework – a way of running Javascript server side to do non cpu intensive tasks like running simple apps or sites, but a lot of the tutorials and examples I was looking at to get started were either too vague or assumed a basic knowledge that I didn’t really have yet. I’ll be honest, I pinged back and forth for a few weeks trying to figure out how to get things working. I wanted something a little simpler and more lightweight so I looked to Node.js. The actual file upload script I’d written as a PHP app, fairly straightforward but a little bloated for what it does. But all that’s changed and I want to talk you through my first Node.js app – an easy to implement file uploader!Ī little bit of history – one of the projects I’m working on a the moment is going to require a constant uploading of csv files to a server so that they can be batched into a database for use in Microsofts Power BI that’s something I’m going to be talking more about in the future. Node itself is one of those things I’ve never really a) had time to properly learn and b) had a chance to actually implement in a real world project. If your Plaid app will be on mobile, see Plaid Link to learn about getting started with mobile client-side setup.įor more sample apps, including a bare-bones minimal Plaid implementation and apps demonstrating real world examples of funds transfer and personal financial management, see sample apps.I’ve talked on here before about using Node’s NPM package manager to get started with Gulp for some lovely workflow simplifications (oh, how I love Gulp!) but that’s all I’ve really been using it for until now. Because of this law, soundproofing treatments are able to trigger stronger absorption results in larger rooms than smaller rooms. These results would be experienced only in an open field, such as the top of a mountain, where no surrounding surfaces would interrupt the path of the sound and reflect it back to alter the results. Of course, in the real world, sound reflections will blur these results. For instance, if you stand 10 feet from a sound source and experience a 90 dB reading, at 20 feet you would experience an 84 dB reading in the absence of echo. This would be the equivalent of cutting your noise pressure levels by 75%. The Inverse Square Law teaches us that for every doubling of the distance between a sound source and the recipient of the sound, a 6 dB drop would occur if there were no echo (as from a mountain top). The further away from the noise source you are, the lower your decibel level readings will become. Sound intensity will diminish over time and distance. The following table will help illustrate the order of magnitude associated with dB.ĩ dB-Drop 12.5% of your noise has survivedġ0 dB-Drop 10% of your noise has survivedģ0 dB-Drop. For each 3 dB you drop, your sound pressure levels will drop another 50% of the remaining sound pressure. By dropping 6 decibels, for instance, you first move 3 dB, and then another 3 dB. This simply means that for every 3 decibels you move up or down the scale from 0-194, you are adding or dropping 50% of your remaining sound pressure levels to your exposure. The decibel scale is logarithmic, not linear. The pain threshold for human ear starts at about 120 dB. Conversational voice levels average a 65 dB rating, while OSHA demands hearing protection for factory workers exposed over an 8 hour period to levels stronger than 85 dB. Daytime hours average 10 dB more sound pressure than night time hours. Your average day is filled with sound sources that typically range from 30-100 dB. A dB reading of “0” indicates the faintest sound the human ear can detect, while a dB reading of “180” would be the equivalent to standing on a rocket pad during launch. The units define how loud a noise source is, ranging on a comparative scale from 0-194. This scale is used particularly in applications where sound travels in water. What is a decibel? A decibel (dB) is a unit of measurement that gages the intensity of sound. It should be noted at this point that there is another decibel scale in use, called the sound pressure level, based on the ratio of the pressure amplitude to a reference pressure. For example, a 56.0 dB sound is twice as intense as a 53.0 dB sound, a 97.0 dB sound is half as intense as a 100 dB sound, and so on. In equation form, intensity I is I=\frac\\ is given (and not the actual intensities), this result is true for any intensities that differ by a factor of two. Power is the rate at which energy is transferred by the wave. Intensity is defined to be the power per unit area carried by a wave. The relevant physical quantity is sound intensity, a concept that is valid for all sounds whether or not they are in the audible range. High noise exposure is hazardous to hearing, and it is common for musicians to have hearing losses that are sufficiently severe that they interfere with the musicians’ abilities to perform. In cartoons depicting a screaming person (or an animal making a loud noise), the cartoonist often shows an open mouth with a vibrating uvula, the hanging tissue at the back of the mouth, to suggest a loud sound coming from the throat Figure 2. We are all very familiar with the loudness of sounds and aware that they are related to how energetically the source is vibrating. But when a passing motorist has his stereo turned up, you cannot even hear what the person next to you in your car is saying. After settling into bed, you may hear your blood pulsing through your ears. In a quiet forest, you can sometimes hear a single leaf fall to the ground. Noise on crowded roadways like this one in Delhi makes it hard to hear others unless they shout. When you press the button, the clock illuminates just enough to make the face legible (a big plus for those of us who like to peek at the time before we have any real intention of waking up). The clock’s sole button consolidates the light and snooze functions (doling out extra sleep in four-minute increments), and we found it effortless to use, even with our eyes closed. The Riki’s prominent face has half-inch-tall numerals and large hour and minute arms, so it’s easy to read-even in dim light and from a distance. The only alarm clock among our picks with a design-award pedigree, the sedate beechwood Riki was designed by Japanese modernist Riki Watanabe, whose work was known for being simple yet functional. Why it’s great: If you want a dependable alarm clock with a timeless analog design that’s dead silent and easy to use, the Lemnos Riki checks all of those boxes. The developers recently added Bluetooth speaker functionality and are promising Spotify connectivity and additional sounds as features that are “coming soon.” We’ll update this guide when-and if-these features appear. For instance, we discovered one night that there were a few more soothing classical compositions to wake up to than we’d had the day before and that alarm-scheduling options had been expanded. But on a regular basis this clock can get additional features delivered via Wi-Fi updates. The Loftie isn’t “smart” like other smart alarm clocks, in that you won’t be served the news or the weather with the aid of a voice assistant. The two other buttons are for setting the alarm, accessing brightness and volume settings, setting the duration of the sleep timer, and choosing alarm tones. You won’t be able to read using the light, but it’s bright enough for when you’re fumbling for your glasses or going to the bathroom in the middle of the night. There’s an adjustable night-light hidden at the base that’s easily turned on and off, using the large button on top of the clock (it also works as the snooze button). We also liked the clock’s all-black exterior (it comes in a white and black option, too), which is free of distracting lights or branding. But it’s clear, and it automatically sets the time once connected to a Wi-Fi network. Of clocks we’ve tested, this one’s display isn’t the largest or the brightest. And though the clock’s single-speaker output can be a bit tinny for playing music, it can get surprisingly loud and is just fine for alarm tones and answering Google Assistant prompts. Fortunately, the clock’s two microphones (one in the front, the other in the back) are very sensitive and able to discern commands, even when we used a hushed volume at night. To set the alarm, adjust the volume, or turn on the night-light, it was always much easier to summon help with a “hey, Google …” instead. There’s also a tap at the top to enable the snooze feature, but it sometimes required another touch to register. Unless you’re looking at them from above, the buttons are discernible only by touch, and I often fumbled at night or in the early morning while trying to turn on music or adjust the volume. Even though the clock is outfitted with four evenly distributed buttons-for volume, turning on music, and the alarm settings-they are obscured from view due to the angled wedge design. Most everything this alarm clock can do is hidden, accessed using its built-in Google Assistant voice controls or with the Google Home app. |
